This is a big question and needs some serious consideration – is your outdated website actually hurting your business?

One thing is for sure if your website has not been upgraded in the last 3 or 4 years (or more *shudder*) the answer is a resounding YES!

SEO plays a major part in your online business – but I get it. SEO is complicated. Especially when you’re not at all interested in the technicalities, you just want results. Right?


Well, the internet moves, changes and adapts very quickly and so does search engine optimization. Oh, and in case you didn’t know, Google is by far the biggest search engine in the galaxy. It’s also been said that they know a thing or two about SEO, and so when they talk, you listen.

After acknowledging that your website might actually suck, and you decide you hire in a professional the next biggy Q you now face is: how to hire an SEO? An SEO that won’t pull a fast one, and potentially, ruin your rankings even more (be warned, it happens!).

#1 New Visitors Might Hit Your Site And Think You Don’t Really Care About How You Represent Your Business

This is very real! If your website hasn’t been upgraded or even updated in a while, what do you think your visitors are going to think? Your website is the equivalent of your high-street shop, people passing by, looking through the window.


Except what they see are dusty, partly stocked shelves, sun-bleached products and a slight musky smell (like you get in a charity thrift shop).

Disclaimer: there’s nothing wrong with a thrift shop, in fact, when I was a student I would get all my clothes from the local charity shop.

And websites don’t actually smell but I digress.

My point is, do you want to give off that impression when new visitors stumble into your virtual shop from the fast-paced internet highway? No, I didn’t think so.

#2 All It Takes Is 3 Seconds For Visitors To Form An Opinion About Your Website – Should I Stay, Or Should I Go?

Despite me referencing a track from The Clash, you do really only have a few seconds to capture the attention of new visitors. Is your site slow loading? Is it build on the latest technology? Is it mobile responsive?  Is your domain secure and using SSL (https://)?

If you’re lucky enough to get visitors to your non-secure & non-mobile friendly website, you can bet your bottom dollar your visitor will leave without thinking twice to look back. I say lucky enough because Google and all the main search engines are now giving preference to sites that have SSL Certification and are optimized for mobile browsers.

Meaning if your site does not meet the requirements, then you’re not going get shown in search results. The search engines want to deliver the best experience for their users, and why would they show them a slow loading, un-secure outdated website, when they can show your competitors’ new shiny one instead?

Tough love.

#3 Talking Of Competition, The Fact Your Website Sucks Means You’re Making Your Competitors Look Amaze-balls!

I’m sure you’ve not got into the business so that everything you do, is to make your competitors look better than you? That’s madness, right? So why let them get one up on you with their spanking new website.

A little investment can go along way, you can get your site bang up to speed, and start actually helping your business to grow – instead of letting it die a slow and untimely death.

#4 Broken Links, Removed/Deleted Pages, 404 Error Page Not Found!

Oh dear, the internet is FULL of these babies! Broken links happen when you link internally or have external links to pointing to pages in your website that no longer exist.

The classic is product pages that have since been removed from the site completely, EXCEPT, you’re still linking to them from an old blog post or a Product listing that’s been long-since forgotten.
