Stephen R. Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, was first published in 1989 and has been a top-seller for the simple reason that it ignores trends and pop psychology for proven principles of fairness, integrity, honesty, and human dignity.

This book has been helping people solve personal and professional problems for the past 27 years (where does the time go?!).

7 Habits… has a personal attachment to me, I remember discovering it around the turn of the century. Up until that time I was a welder and was working on the Jubilee Line extension in London, UK. I was earning great money but was knee deep in mud, getting burnt for hot metal & sparks and covered in grime and dust each day. I was eating greasy fry ups every morning, mixing with ‘real men’ who read the Daily Mail & The Sun. I knew there had to be more to life…

I was always curious within myself as to what was outside the box. I always felt/thought a little differently but it wasn’t until that day that I walked in the Waterstones on Charing Cross Road in London and picked up this book that I realised just how much.

It’s safe to say that The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People changed my life. I devoured this book several times over, beginning to end. It was my awakening. I knew then that the impossible was indeed possible, I just had to think differently.

Long-story-short; a year after reading this book I applied for university. I got in. I was a mature student (32 years old) and got accepted, not because of my academic grades but because of my life experiences. And three years later, in 2006, I graduated with a BA Honours 1st class degree in business management.

The rest, as they say, is history.

I would love to know what books changed your life, and why. Leave a comment below.
