“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” ― Leo Tolstoy
It was around the 17,238th day of co-sharing this beautiful planet with you and the other 7.5 billion people that it hit me… my ‘one thing’ finally revealed itself… & I needed to change.
For better or worse, experiences shape our view of the world.
Up till now my journey has been somewhat wide-ranging: from traumatic childhood experiences, consisting of betrayal and abuse, to an angst-filled youth wasted from taking too many mind-altering drugs (the bad kind), to training up to become a skilled engineer & coded welder, to mastering bass guitar and becoming a semi-pro touring musician, to earning a BA Hons in business as a mature student, to becoming a full stack digital marketer with 15 years experience (what I like to now describe as a “funnel architect”), moving to another continent to become a hotelier and, at 43 years of age, becoming… (the highlight of it all so far) a father to a beautiful boy.
And it was the day our son decided to join us that everything changed.
Despite cramming all of these experiences into a relatively short 17,238 days I was still unsure how I fit into the grand harmony of life.
No matter what I did it always felt like something was missing.
As a parent I began to wonder, more than ever before, about what is my purpose and what legacy might I leave my son? The saddest thing I can think of is laying on my deathbed and the last thought I have is knowing I’ve not lived my life to its fullest potential.
And every night when I watch my son sleep I am filled with pride and wonder.. and I am also filled with fear & worry.
On one side I have this sweet innocent bundle of joy and on the other a big wide open insecure world. I can not help but become more anxious about the future — his future, his peers future & I can not help but wonder what the world would be like by 2050, 2100 and beyond.
I won’t go as far as saying society is broken, I don’t think it is. We’ve just been lied to, too many times, by the institutions and leaders that are meant to guide us. However, people are waking up, a movement is forming, one that is disrupting the status quo and I want to be a part of this change… but how?
This is what I’ve been thinking, and I mean deep-down, inside-out thinking:
How can I best use the time I have left to maximise my effectiveness. What can I do to create as much positive impact as possible whilst I am still able — for us today and for them tomorrow?
And then sometime during my 17,238th day on this planet, it hit me.
Passion + Purpose + Profit = Epicness
Hypothesis: What if I could build a profitable business to care and provide for my family, one that would align my passion for creating sales & marketing processes with social entrepreneurs, enterprises & changemakers helping them to achieve their goals so they can bring more changes into the world?
Motivated by this idea I began to dig deep into Google and learn about movements like Conscious Capitalism who say:
“We believe that business is good because it creates value, it is ethical because it is based on voluntary exchange, it is noble because it can elevate our existence and it is heroic because it lifts people out of poverty and creates prosperity. Free enterprise capitalism is the most powerful system for social cooperation and human progress ever conceived. It is one of the most compelling ideas we humans have ever had. But we can aspire to even more.”
And amazing podcasts like Humans 2.0 by Mark Metry, books like People Over Profit and organizations like Ashoka and B1G1 Business for Good (whom I’m now proud B1G1 Champion)
And this my friend, is how my ‘one thing’… my purpose… presented itself.
